It is so easy to live entirely from the neck up.
In a world that demands we move faster, produce more, and think our way through every problem, our bodies often become nothing more than the vehicles that carry our heads from one meeting to the next. We might only notice them when they are tired, hungry, or in pain.
For many of us—especially women and non-binary femmes—leaving the body was actually a brilliant strategy. It may have been the only way to feel safe during times of stress, trauma, or overwhelm. Floating above the surface of our skin protected us when the world felt too heavy.
But there comes a moment when the protection begins to feel like a cage. We realize that by numbing the pain or the fear, we have also quieted the joy, the pleasure, and the deep, resonant hum of being alive.
This is where the power of embodiment begins.
Embodiment is not about forcing yourself to "feel" or perfecting a yoga pose. It is simply the gentle, gradual practice of coming home. It is the shift from thinking about your life to fully inhabiting it.
When we gently guide our awareness back into the body, we send a signal to our nervous system that we are safe. We move out of the racing mind and down into the wisdom of the gut and the heart.
Why does this matter?
Because your body is where your intuition lives. It is where desire sparks. It is where intimacy is felt. You cannot think your way into a deeper connection with a partner, and you cannot analyze your way into self-love. You have to feel your way there.
A Small Practice for Today
You don’t need to change everything at once. Today, just try this:
- Take a moment to pause.
- Feel the weight of your feet resting on the floor.
- Notice the texture of the fabric against your skin.
- Try to name one pleasant or neutral sensation you can recognize in your body.
- Take a breath, not to fix anything, but just to feel the air fill your chest.
Welcome home. You are safe here.
